Constitutional Amendments
Propose, discuss, and vote on changes to the SSE governing documents
Currently, the Vice President is elected separately by the membership. This amendment removes the VP from the election process and instead allows the Presidential nominees to appoint their Vice Presidential candidate, similar to a presidential running mate system. This ensures the President and VP are aligned in vision and can work effectively together from the start of their term.

In its current state, the Society of Software Engineers' constitution sets stringent requirements for who is allowed to run for primary officer positions, especially President and Vice President. In order to become President or Vice President, a student must, among other things, be a Software Engineering student. Other Primary Officers must be GCCIS students. This means that a great number of people in the SSE, not only members, but officers and mentors, are unable to hold any higher positions because of this archaic constitutional provision. We are the Society of Software Engineers, and I take this to mean not a society of people enrolled in Software Engineering, but rather a society of passionate, wonderful students who love software engineering enough to pursue a career in the field of computing. This amendment expands who is allowed to run for Primary Officer positions, while still ensuring that only strong candidates qualify, by allowing anyone in a major that has a co-op program to occupy these positions. This includes not only other Golisano majors, such as Game Design and Computer Science, but also other majors that are heavily related to software engineering, such as Computer Engineering. It also says that at least one of these co-ops needs to be completed by the start of the term for the President and Vice President.

This amendment is proposed to formally recognize and codify the expanded scope of responsibilities held by the Mentoring Head position. Given that the Mentoring Head oversees a significantly greater number of operational processes relative to other committee head roles of comparable designation, it is warranted to propose an elevation in official standing. Accordingly, this amendment seeks to reclassify the Mentoring Head as a Primary Officer role within the organization. This reclassification would more accurately reflect the weight and breadth of the position's duties, and would formally affirm that Mentoring constitutes one of the four foundational pillars of this organization... a distinction that merits appropriate representation at the primary officer level.
